I’ve spent my life behind the lens, behind the brush, and behind the scenes exploring the world through photography, illustration, and design while also safeguarding Canada. With over 25 years of military experience, I’ve worked as a military photographer, an artist, and a security expert, but at my core, I am a visual storyteller. My work spans bold digital illustrations, striking black-and-white photography, vivid landscapes, and intricate design, all fueled by a passion for capturing the world as I see it—not just how it looks, but how it feels.

I became a photographer because I was blind.

Seriously.

In 1998, I walked into a Canadian Forces recruiting center ready to become an infantry soldier, only to be told my eyesight wasn’t good enough to shoot a gun. But instead of sending me home, the recruiter said, “How about photography?” Turns out good vision was not a prerequisite for shooting a camera. And just like that, my fate was sealed. I picked up a camera, and my life behind the lens began.

For 24 years, I served as a military photographer, traveling the world to capture history as it happened. From ships in the Arabian Sea to deployments in Afghanistan, my camera was my constant companion. I documented training, combat operations, and the everyday lives of soldiers, sailors, and aircrew, often in places few ever see. My work was published internationally, earning me the CAF Photographer of the Year award in 2002 (though I credit that more to being the only photographer within thousands of miles at the time). I loved my job, and I loved the Navy. To be a visual storyteller was a privilege and honour for these key moments in Canada’s history.

My career took a pivotal turn when I was selected to support Canada’s Special Forces (CANSOF) as part of a specialized technical reconnaissance and surveillance team. During this time, I honed my expertise in technical security, CCTV camera systems, and surveillance technologies, developing skills that would shape the next chapter of my career. I worked in high-risk environments conducting security and technical reconnaissance operations using advanced imaging and other technical systems. This experience would pave the way for a post military career in protective security.

By the age of 40, and after only 20 years of service, I had achieved a milestone few reach: I was appointed Public Affairs Branch Chief Warrant Officer and Senior Imagery Technician for the Canadian Armed Forces. In this role, I led a nationwide team of military photographers and videographers, helped modernize the CAF’s operational imagery workflows, and worked at the highest levels of military public affairs and strategic communication. What started as a reluctant career choice had evolved into a leadership position where I could shape the future of military imagery.
