Eiffel Tower at Sunset – Paris Print

Description

Shot from the Champ de Mars as the last of the sun dropped behind the Trocadéro, in the ten or fifteen minutes when the tower’s own lighting comes up and the sky is still holding colour. The gradient runs the full height of the frame, deep violet at the top down through rose to a band of hot orange at the horizon, and the ironwork sits against it lit warm gold from the inside out.

Vertical framing, which is the only way this subject really works. The tower fills the frame from the crowd silhouetted at the base to the mast at the top, trees closing both bottom corners, and the arch underneath opening onto the lit buildings across the river.

This is the first portrait format piece in the collection and it hangs differently from the rest: narrow, tall, and good in the places a landscape will not go. A stairwell, a narrow wall between windows, beside a doorway, or paired with a second vertical.
