Description
Straight up into the Art Nouveau dome of the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, camera flat on its back in the middle of the atrium. Ten steel ribs radiate from a stained glass rosette at the centre, the panels running blue and white with bands of amber, green and deep red where the coloured glass sits. Off to one side the glass walkway suspended beneath the dome puts two visitors in silhouette, which is the only thing in the frame that tells you the scale.
Ferdinand Chanut’s dome has stood since 1912. Photographed square on like this it stops being a ceiling and becomes pattern, closer to a mandala than a building.
A near-symmetrical, graphic piece that works where a landscape would not. It hangs well square to a wall, and it does something unusual: with no horizon in it, it reads correctly from any angle in the room.
