The corner of rue de l’Abreuvoir and rue des Saules in Montmartre, at the exact minute the sunset went pink. La Maison Rose has been painted by more artists than almost any other building in Paris, and this frame catches it under a sky doing the same colour as its walls, ivy spilling four storeys down the building beside it and the rooftops of the city falling away to the right.

What makes the shot is the light. The sky runs from burning orange at the horizon through rose to a heavy violet overhead, and the little restaurant sits lit and quiet underneath it with its green shutters closed. The street is empty. Montmartre almost never is.

A warm, romantic piece that stops short of sentimental. It suits a kitchen, a dining room, or a hallway, and it sits particularly well in a room with wood or warm neutrals.
