Notre-Dame de Paris – Black and White Print

Description

The west façade of Notre-Dame de Paris, shot from directly below and hard to one side so the whole front leans back across the frame. In monochrome the cathedral becomes what it actually is underneath the tourism: stone, geometry and repetition. The Gallery of Kings runs its twenty-eight figures across the middle, the rose window sits dead centre, and the two towers climb out of the top corners against a sky rendered almost black.

Eight and a half centuries of building, rebuilding and, since 2019, restoring. The tonal treatment is deliberately heavy, warm blacks and open highlights, closer to a nineteenth century architectural study than a travel photograph.

A serious print. It suits a study, a library, an office, or anywhere a monochrome piece can carry a wall on its own without competing with colour.
